GCC identifies collaborating with the government and building partnerships as a strong strategy for the entry and sustainability of its interventions. To that effect, GCC puts great emphasis on collaborating with both National and State Governments in its region and states of intervention.

In order to strengthen Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) in Borno state, GCC has been collaborating with the Borno State Government in advancing an enabling environment for improved RMNCAH services, especially in rural communities. This is done by empowering rural adolescent girls and training them as Village Health Workers (VHWs) in Borno State, Nigeria.

As a result of the successes recorded in the VHWs training and in recognition of this feat, the Borno State Government has in collaboration with Multi-sectorial Crises Recovery Project (MCRP) and World Bank adopted the GCC model and mandated GCC to train some midwives, nurses and CHEWS in all the LGAs of the state.

The main objective of the training was to strengthen the skills of nurses/midwives and community health extension workers on ways to prevent maternal and infant mortality and morbidity by identifying and taking necessary action where problems occur during pregnancy, labour, delivery and the early postpartum period. It is an intervention for reducing maternal, neonatal mortality and morbidity.

The goal of the training was to produce competent and confident health care managers at the grass-root level who can refer complicated cases for promptly.

The participants were taken through practical sessions. Two facilitators were assigned to each health facility to guide them through the practical session to identify what they learnt in the class.

At the end of the training, the participants i.e.- nurses, midwives and CHEWS were equipped with skills and knowledge on reproductive health, quality antenatal care, family planning, child health referrals, use of oxytocic-drugs malaria in pregnancy nutrition among others.
