FEMALE STUDENTS SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME ENROLLMENT INTO THE GIRLS ACADEMY.

Girl Child Concerns, as part of its activities and in an effort to accelerate the pursuit of the education of the girl child beyond primary level, introduced the Female Students Scholarship Scheme System in 1998 mainly to create an enabling environment for the girls especially those from the less privileged/indigent families to further their education after successfully completing primary school. The project aims at giving girl children opportunities to attain the highest level of educational pursuits in their lives with little financial costs. The scheme provides scholarship to girls in secondary schools. Over 300 girls have graduated from the Female Student Scholarship Scheme (FSSS) including 42 escaped girls abducted by Boko Haram in 2014. Four of the 2017 GCC grandaunts have secured admission into the University of Notre Dame Indiana in United States out of which 2 are Chibok girls.

Girl Child Concerns secures scholarships for identified less privileged and very intelligent girls, provides them with skills that empower them to become active and resourceful members of their various communities. In the last five (5) years, GCC has had a strong focus on meeting the educational and social needs of young girls affected by Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East especially Borno State; giving these girls education, life skills, sexual and reproductive health education and mentoring.

THE GCC GIRLS ACADEMY

This year’s enrolment into the Female Student Scholarship Scheme (FSSS) is a remarkable one as GCC is enrolling the first set of girls to be registered into the GCC Girls Academy in Borno. The Girls Academy is another initiative by GCC to ensure more girls in Borno state especially those from IDP Camps, access secondary education through its scholarship scheme. The academy is aimed at reintegrating vulnerable adolescent girls affected by the insurgency from the North East which has one of the highest indices of out of school children with girls constituting a higher percentage back to normal life, by enrolling them into the academy which is a special secondary school within Borno metropolis, so that they can complete their secondary education. The project will adopt the India Kahn Academy concept which empowers learners to study at their own pace in and outside the classroom through class lessons, practical exercises, instructional videos and a personalized learning dashboard.
